General Business License

In order to effectively protect the public health, general welfare, and safety of the citizens of Cook County, businesses operating in Unincorporated Cook County are required to obtain a Cook County General Business License.

This requirement allows the County Government to ensure businesses operating in Unincorporated Cook County are in compliance with public health and public safety standards, as well as all other County ordinances. This will protect consumers from bad business practices and prevent illegal businesses from negatively influencing legitimate commerce.

There is a fee of $40.00 per license for a 2 year period. The new license period is effective from March 1, 2017 through February 28, 2019. If you fail to purchase your General Business License by March 1, 2017 there will be a penalty of $40.00 that is assessed in addition to the regular License fee. Instructions on making a payment are included at the end of the General Business License Application.

Cook County General Business License Ordinance (Article X)

Who is required to apply:

Any person or business in unincorporated Cook County must obtain a General Business License if:

- They maintain a fixed place of business within unincorporated Cook County, or
- They own or lease real property within unincorporated Cook County for business purposes, or
- They regularly maintain a stock of tangible personal property within unincorporated Cook County for sale in the ordinary course of business.

Failure to comply:

Failure to obtain a General Business License can result in penalties as prescribed per Cook County Ordinance Sec 54-394.
